The penny farthing bicycle, also known as the high wheel bicycle, was a type of bicycle that was popular in the late 19th century. It was named after the two different sized wheels that resembled a penny and a farthing coin. The penny farthing had a very large front wheel, sometimes reaching up to five feet in diameter, and a much smaller rear wheel. Riders would sit on a saddle positioned directly over the front wheel and pedal directly on the wheel hub. The design of the penny farthing made it very fast, but also very dangerous, as riders were prone to taking falls from the high height of the bicycle.
